Artisan designer and goldsmith Inna Nechyporenko is INNAN: an independent jewellery Atelier crafting contemporary urban fine jewellery, in the heart of Berlin.

A personal conversation with INNAN founder Inna Nechyporenko on the stories, craft, and inspirations that guide her jewellery art.

How did you evolve from catwalk model to jewellery designer?

I started modelling and travelling the world at 18, but for me, the epiphany came in 2011, when I saw a Victoire de Castellane fine jewellery show at Gagosian Gallery in Paris, entitled Fleurs d’Excès. I was completely blown away! It was my first real encounter with artistic fine jewellery - not just as accessories, but as expressive, conceptual works of art.

I grew up in Ukraine in the 1990s and I had not seen anything like this before. So, I guess that was the moment that really planted the seed.

When you began studying jewellery-making, what were the stories you wanted to tell?

I started envisioning these very architectural shapes, using the line as a structural element. I wanted to create things I hadn’t seen before; I wasn’t interested in crafting traditional shapes. That’s how the Chaotic line began, which has since become my signature ring shape.

Everything started from there, really. Plus, I've always loved Brutalist architecture, and growing up in Kyiv, where we have incredible examples of it, that shaped my aesthetic too. I think elegance should be a little raw, a little brutal. I love the balance between beauty and imperfection.

How has your approach evolved over the years?

Texture has become a key element in my work. For instance, I’ve developed a style of stone-setting that resembles volcanic craters. I love how the gemstones merge with the metal. Actually, gemstones have become a bigger part of my work too, and I really enjoy experimenting with interesting colours - a natural grey Spinel for example. I find that gemstone colours can really complement someone’s hair and eye colour.

The Chaotic line has also evolved, into Chaotic Signet rings. These have a clean signet shape, but with a single architectural curve holding the stone in place, as if it was levitating! That was technically quite a challenge, but I’m very proud of how it’s turned out.

Now, I’m especially enjoying working with yellow gold – it’s just so gentle and shapeable. It’s fascinating how this strong metal can hold stones in such a fluid, delicate way.

Which artists especially inspire you?

Artists like Bernar Venet, Richard Serra and Tony Cragg have always inspired me. Their focus on geometry, line, and texture really resonates with my own design approach. I’m also drawn to artists who use light as a medium, like Olafur Eliasson and James Turrell for example.

How would you sum up your practise today?

I strive to create miniature works of art, pieces that are high-quality, deeply personal and timeless. Every piece of jewellery I make carries emotional value. And personalising designs for my customers feels as if I’m telling their unique stories in metal. These jewellery pieces become little treasures, meant to be passed down through generations and cherished as memories of important moments and life milestones.
